VIDEOS TRANSFERED TO DVD

The following question was asked:

I do not have a video machine any more. What do I do with all my videos? Am I allowed to transfer it to DVD?

Our answer:

Unfortunately we cannot give you permission to do that. There is however a cheaper and better option which we want to offer you. Let us explain.

The reasons why products with copyright may not be duplicated are as follows:

To copy any of our products is illegal. Should the police catch you in possession of one, you will be fined (currently under South African law) for the amount of R5 000.00 or alternatively three years in prison for each copy. The same applies to whoever made the copy for you. If it was a company, their name would suffer.

All our DVDs and videos are duplicated on a specific VHS tape or DVD disc and packed in a certain plastic casing with a cover designed and printed exclusively by us. It is almost impossible to copy the labels on the VHS tapes and the artwork on the face of the DVDs exactly.

To author the DVD with its interactive motion menus is very expensive. It takes about two weeks to create and test the motion menus before it is launched. To copy that would be very expensive.

Whenever the VHS tape is directly copied, the whole structure of the menu is lost. It is precisely this menu that causes the DVD to be such an effective way to teach or train.

Additionally we at Kérugma have tried our utmost, right from the start, to use only the best broadcast quality camera and other equipment to make our master copies so that the message of the gospel on DVD format can be watched at the best quality possible. Whenever a DVD copy is made directly from a VHS tape, you get only the bad quality of the VHS tape on DVD. You will be surprised to see the difference in quality between a VHS tape and a real DVD.

As a result we can never give permission that DVDs be made from VHS tapes. If we were to give permission to one person to transfer his VHS tape to DVD, it would open the door to more such copies and no-one will be able to say which copies are legal and which illegal.

What is important to us in this case, is the quality of the product.

We however do have a solution for those who want to change their VHS tapes to DVD.

We will gladly exchange the VHS copies for DVDs at R50.00 per DVD plus postage. This arrangement is of course only applicable within South Africa. If you bought your Video elsewhere, please feel free to contact your supplier. Otherwise you can still send it to us, but you will be responsible for the postage. All you have to do is to send us the VHS tape with the R50.00 (cheque or bank deposit) per copy plus postage. We will gladly exchange your VHS tapes for DVDs. (Customers outside South Africa must please not send a cheque).

Please remember to send it by insured mail. The postage is the same as seen on our order form. We have to receive the VHS tape before we can send the DVD.

You must remember that we have to pay royalties on many of the videos and DVDs that we produce and/or distribute of certain ministries. Most of the time we pay a certain amount per cover of whatever we order from them. That amount is included in the R50.00.

You will agree that R50.00 is cheaper than paying someone to transfer the VHS tape to a DVD.
